Why is a clicker important?
Using a clicker helps to bridge the gap between the human world and the dog world. Positive behavior can be reinforced by "marking" it. When the dog knows what behaviors are rewarded, they are much more likely to repeat those positive behaviors. Overall, the clicker (or any other consistent marker) helps tighten the communication with your pup. And like with all relationships, knowing HOW to communicate is the key to success!
How to use the clicker
The puppies must first be conditioned to associate the click sound with something good. Essentially, they need to learn that the clicker sound means: "Good dog; I like what you just did; now you get a prize!" So, we begin with simply associating the sound with a treat. This exercise only takes a few moments. It doesn't take long for the pups to connect the dots.
From there, we can begin using the clicker as a training tool. The moment we like something the pup does (sit, come, respond to name, etc), we immediately CLICK and provide a TREAT. We can also use a command word at this time, too, to teach them the language of the actions we are requesting.
Will I always have to use the clicker?
No. The clicker is an initial communication tool. With consistency, their brains will quickly learn what makes you proud of them, and they will be eager to please you.
Once communication is properly established, the relationship you will have with your pup will be beyond beautiful!
P.S. - All our adopting families will have a clicker in their puppy go-home bag!
